A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, according to Chinese philosopher Laozi.  Or if you prefer – how do you eat an elephant? – one mouthful at a time, according to my mate’s dad.  Same difference – today we embark on what will be a long and entertaining journey.  With a bit of luck, we might learn some stuff too.  The launch edition of this new global cycling quarterly ‘Conquista Magazine’ represents our first baby step, or mouthful of elephant, depending on your metaphorical preference.

Like all the most interesting journeys, there are bound to be some unexpected turns along the way, maybe even a breakdown or two.  But as is often said, the most important aspect of a journey, is not necessarily the destination, but the voyage itself.  And the journey is never only about the places you visit, but perhaps more so the people you meet along the way.

We invite you to come with us on our little voyage of discovery.  Conquista Magazine was born out of a frustration with some aspects of modern cycling media.  Too much “advertorial” and paid for comment.  Too much dumbing-down and lowest common denominator crap as publishers chase reader numbers, driven by an apparent belief that is how to engage with the new audience recently attracted to our great sport.  We are not adverse to newcomers, we just think they deserve to be afforded some respect and never talked down to.  And as for the old guard, those stalwart fans who have followed our sport through thin and thinner, seemingly now left behind in this “golden age”, an afterthought by some publications, or worse still, not catered to at all.  In Conquista Magazine we strive to fill this void.  To offer ample space for intelligent debate on the issues of the day – unimpaired writing, only bookended by the necessary interruption of advertising, never interrupted mid-flow.

We value our commercial partners greatly.  In order to keep the digital edition of Conquista free to all, we need advertising revenue.  We chose our commercial partners carefully and we respect them as well as our readers.  Some will be global brands, others independent start-ups.  But they will typically be people we trust and have worked with for a long time.  They won’t all have the finest graphic designers delivering the slickest ads, but they will all have heart, and soul.

This platform is as much yours as ours and we urge you to engage via our website Conquista.CC and social media platforms – (usual suspects). We welcome contributions from new writers – we want fresh content and value your opinions – you don’t have to be a journalist to tell a story or share your arguments.  This does not mean that we will print any old shite we receive.  But if you want to get something off your chest, deliver a thoughtful and considered point of view, nourish an intelligent debate, then we want to hear from you.  Email us.

In this launch edition, that we have pedantically dubbed “Issue 0 – The Prologue”, we are showcasing the work of our “resident” snappers.  We love their work, and we hope you do too.  We are “image” heavy in this issue – we wanted to pick a handful of our favourite shots from each one – but there were just so many.  You won’t see typical race photography, we wanted to bring you different and interesting images from unusual angles or content not normally captured at a bike race.

And the writing – essentially from previously unpublished sources.  A view from inside the peloton.  These are not just our opinions, these are the views of pro riders and former pros.  Who better to tell their stories?  So forgive us if the writing is not necessarily as polished as if might be.  As one of my old gaffers used to say about how Germans speak English – listen to WHAT they are saying, not HOW they say it.

So, please enjoy Conquista Magazine, we are grateful to have you along for the ride.  Time for me to go and take the elephant for a walk – you didn’t really think I was going to eat him did you?
